Ernst & Wilhelm Bertram
Ernst Bertram was born September 4 1886 in Lerbach bei Osterode and died in May 1974 in
München, mechanical engineer. Wilhelm Bertram was born April 4 1903 in Lerbach bei Osterode and died January 20 1990 in München. Both brothers were since 1940 owners of E. & W. Bertram.

The company Ernst & Wilhelm Bertram, Oberburgemeister-Wunder-strasse 103, was registered at 1 January 1940 and was a succession of the workshop of Ernst Bertram. Who re-opened a photo technical workshop in 1929 in the Planeggerstrasse 15 in
München-Pasing. Besides manufacturing of mechanical and electrical exposure meters for a short time in 1952 a 6 x9 reporter camera was made. In January 1983 ended Bertram under the chief Wilhelm Bertram his work.

Bertram made several different exposure meters like the Bertram Amateur, electro Bewi, Bewi Automat A and B, Bewi Quick, Bewi Optical, Bewi Super and Super L, Bewi Super. Also the bertram Chronos and Chrostar. James Ollinger has a nice website with description of a number of Bertram exposure meters.

Ernst Rumpoldin came from Linhof and started working for Bertram, he was responsible for the construction of the Bertram kamera. Went to Agfa in 1956 to become chief of the department of exposure meters and small instruments.

Bewi made also build-in exposure meters to be build into camera's like the Voigtlander Vito BL. (The Vito BL is based on the Vito B, with the addition of a light-meter. The camera was introduced in 1956, at which time it was fitted with a Bewi-Automat meter. This is operated by pressing a button on the camera back and pointing the camera at the subject. After about a second, a shutter-speed/aperture reading can be taken. )

A disadvantage of these meters is the flexible band with the exposure times and light values on it. During time, this band becomes dried out and the flexibility is then gone. The band breaks and the meter is not longer functional. I have seen this with several meters and can be checked very easy by turning the little curled knob on the front. If the band does not move or rotate, it's gone.
