G.E.C.

The General Electric Company or GEC was a major UK company involved in consumer and defence electronics, communications and engineering. The company was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It was renamed Marconi Corporation plc in 1999 after its defence arm was sold to British Aerospace. In 2005 Ericsson purchased the bulk of Marconi and the remaining businesses were renamed Telent.

GEC traces its origins to G. Binswanger and Company, an electrical goods wholesaler established in London during the 1880s by a German immigrant Gustav Binswanger (later Gustav Byng). Regarded as the year GEC was founded, 1886 saw Byng joined by a fellow immigrant, Hugo Hirst, and the company changed its name to The General Electric Apparatus Company (G. Binswanger).

This small business found early success with its unorthodox method of supplying electrical components over the counter. Hugo Hirst was an entrepreneurial salesman who foresaw the potential of electricity and was able to direct standardisation of an industry in its infancy. He travelled across Europe with an eye for the latest products and in 1887 the company published the first electrical catalogue of its kind. The following year the company acquired its first factory in Salford where telephones, electric bells, ceiling roses and switches were manufactured.

A number of GE exposure meter types are known, GE DW-40, DW-47, DW-58, DW-68, model 213, PC-1, PR-1, PR-2, PR-3,PR -30, PR-35.

The PR-1, unlike many of the meters in the 50s doesn’t directly return a light value in footcandles. Instead, the calculator dial is adjusted to line up with the meter needle and the shutter speeds are directly read from there.

The meter has a rather clever design. The PR-1 "automatically" selects a range by the user turning the calculator dial to the appropriate set of values. The sensitivity switch uses a little panel inside the meter to regulate the amount of light reaching the selenium cell, and at the same time the whole calculator dial is shifted the required number of stops. The one PR-series convenience is the "meter lockup" feature. To take a reading, a button on the side of the meter is pressed; when the button is released, the needle stays at that reading making it easier to use the calculator dial.
