Weston

Sangamo Electric Co.
British-born American electrical engineer and industrialist who founded the Weston Electrical Instrument Company. Weston studied medicine at the insistence of his parents; but, after receiving his medical diploma in 1870, he went to New York City, where he was employed as a chemist.

While working with an electroplating company, he decided that a generator would be more efficient than batteries as a source of power for electroplating. He subsequently invented and manufactured a highly successful electroplating dynamo.  Overshadowed by others in the field of lighting (arc and incandescent), Weston in 1886 turned his attention to the design and manufacture of electrical measuring instruments.

In 1888 he organized the Weston Electrical Instrument Company, which became world famous for its high-quality electrical products. Weston became a U.S. citizen in 1923.

Sangamo Weston Ltd

The company was founded in 1921 under the name "British Sangamo " as the United Kingdom subsidiary of the "Sangamo Electric Co." of Springfield, Illinois, USA and initially manufactured integrating kilowatt hour meters and later expanded its activities to include industrial time switches.

In 1936 British Sangamo acquired the "Weston Electrical Instrument Co. " of Surbiton, Surrey. This company was the United Kingdom subsidiary of the "Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation", of Newark, New Jersey, USA, a company founded by Dr. Weston (a pioneer in the field of electrical measurements), and recognized as one of the worlds leading manufacturers of electrical measuring and associated equipment. The two companies were combined to form "Sangamo Weston ", which designed and manufactured a wide range of electrical measuring and control equipment.

Sangamo Weston became associated with products for the aviation industry and as a result, devoted its entire resources during the 1939-45 war, to the production of measuring instruments, indicators and associated ancillary equipment for use on aircraft. After World War 2 resources were put back into the original product lines but they continued to design and manufacture aircraft measuring instruments, indicators, measuring systems and associated equipment for customers all over the world.

In 1976 the Sangamo Weston Group was acquired by Schlumberger and is now part of the Roxboro Group.

Euro-MASTER II Exposure Meter, the latest version of Weston Exposure Meter

...the World's Most Respected Exposure Meter,
The Euro-Master II - the latest in the line that started with the original Weston Master I, over fifty years ago. The classic design concept of a selenium photocell, an easily-read scale, and a circular calculator dial, is still as valid today as when it was first conceived. The response of the selenium cell is well matched to that of the film emulsion - both panchromatic and colour; this avoids the errors, which can arise, for example when using a cell lacking red sensitivity in evening light.

After many years of providing photometric test equipment and service to the lighting and allied industries, the directors of Megatron have decided to close down operations at the end of February 2010.

With their full agreement, from 1st March 2010 Optical Test and Calibration (OTC) has continued to provide calibration support of your Megatron light meters. Calibration of your equipment is offered in accordance with OTC's UKAS accreditation or traceable to other appropriate standards.
OTC cannot provide repair services for Weston Master photography light meters and does not have a source of supply for replacement Selenium photocells
